Citizenship

Citizenship

Which documents do I need?

If you do not have school qualifications from Germany, you generally need the following documents to apply for German citizenship:

  • Proof of German language skills at level B1: The Foreigners‘ Office (Ausländerbehörder) accept the Deutsch-Test für Zuwanderer (DTZ) graded at B1 and the Goethe-Zertifikat B1 as proof of language ability.

For details of these tests (registration, exam dates, etc.) please click here.

  • The citizenship test (Einbürgerungstest), demonstrates knowledge of living conditions, the social and legal systems in Germany.

If you have successfully completed the integration course required by the Federal Agency for Migration and Refugees (Bundesamt für Migration und Flüchtlinge), this qualifies you for citizenship.
